andrew birch
Andrew Birch is as many-layered as an onion. At every layer, however, he is the quintessential Englishman.
Born in Burton-on-Trent in 1952 he read biology. In true Brit fashion, he immediately abandoned the life scientific and realigned his creativity to a more subjective approach. Andrew Birch the cartoonist emerged from his chrysalis as soon as the strictures of a tertiary education could be abandoned without sanction. However, not one to discard the English protocol of “waste not want not”, his first job nodded to the science world – as news cartoonist for Nature.
He has lived in Spain for more than two decades but has not lost sight of his roots. Working as a freelance cartoonist (being widely published in the Eye, Prospect, The Oldie, Saga and so on) he has held on to his British demeanour, manifest in his sartorial preference for tweed – even on the beach. He is referred to locally as “the mad Englishman”!
He tops his British hard-wiring now - or perhaps doesn’t - by applying his mind to his developing bald patch, growing his hair long and addressing the issue in his work.
andrew birch’s cartoons are exhibiting from friday 21st june 2013 to friday 2nd august 2013
