As Bonfest brings the world of rock and roll to Kirriemuir, Bank Street Gallery adds to the excitement with an exhibition of pop art. Robert McSpadyen is a print maker based in Glasgow Print Studio. Over the last decade, he has brought to life darlings of the twentieth century: Keith Richards, Shirley MacLaine, Ava Gardner, Oor Wullie!
The prints in this small exhibition are a sound reflection of the artist. His personal humility hides strong views and strength of character. That fortitude shines through in his work. The power of his images generates huge visual impact and yet does not mask the humanity of his subjects. They remain real people, caught up in the business. The youth of Bob Dylan, the femininity of Shirley MacLaine; these images reveal individuals who are just like us, notwithstanding McSpadyen’s pop art treatment.
A limited edition print of Bon Scott has been commissioned for this year’s Bonfest. Sales will support the work of DD8 Music, a music driven, youth community project in Kirriemuir. Not quite ready, the exhibition includes a digital representation of this special fund-raising piece. Orders can be taken and despatched around the world.
This show runs from Friday 29th April 2016 to Friday 10th June 2016.
