Claire Ramsay follows a long history of fine, creative exports from Angus. Whether art, poetry, music or literature, this small county on Scotland's east coast boasts many. Of Forfar stock, Claire graduated first class in drawing and painting from Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone Art College in 2000. Like many before her, she was drawn to London, ultimately enrolling at Chelsea College of Art and Design, picking up an MA in Fine Art in 2005. She is now based in Aberfeldy, painting and managing her own gallery.
Travelling is significant. Her keen eye has clearly observed - and still drinks in - every little detail of life, consuming and consumed by its curiosities. The result is itself a curiosity.
She is unmistakable a master technician - manifest in the execution of all her work - but the juxtaposition of style and content reveal her inquiring mind. She sees life differently and whilst she may not divulge her own internal struggle to analyse and understand, she coats her vision in a special beauty for her audience. She surprises with proportion and perspective, woos us with her unspoken respect for those who have gone before, from Pre-Raphaelites, through Impressionists and Modernists, to her own forerunners and contemporaries here in Scotland. But she is above all unique.
Already a jewel in the Scottish crown, Claire Ramsay will shine a light, vicariously enhancing her home county, for many, many years to come.
