This third one man show from Jonathan Mitchell once again reveals his genius.  The artist, his many talents and influences are here – writ large!

For the hardened fan, however, fear not.  His landscapes are here, waiting for you, pulling you in to an oasis of calm; calming your rat-race headaches and slowing the heart-rate.

Scale is perhaps of growing interest to the artist. Le Puy-en-Velay takes his palette from rolling Scottish glens and peaks we know so well from him and transported us to the nestling communities of south-central France.  As ever, Mitchell remains firmly in control of his use of light.  He is a master in controlling its effect across the canvas.  But, we see a different atmosphere.  Quite apart from the subject of his composition, he rises to the challenge of capturing that foreign air.

But the show doesn’t stop there.  The fun side of Jonathan’s personality shines through in his unhinged diptych, pictomanias (a) and (b).  Scale and colour hit you immediately – along with excitement!  Look more closely, however, and you see the light technician at work again.  The tubes and knots enjoy a tangible depth and warmth that are largely driven by the use of shadow and light.  Juxtaposing realism and abstraction, the viewer is left smiling and asking questions.  Who will be brave enough to ask aloud?  We dare you! So clever; so entertaining; the pieces just make you feel good!

Jonatahn ‘s one man show at Bank Street Gallery closes Friday 10th November 2017.
