Siret Roots
For Siret Roots, it's all about the art.
Roots exhibits in Scotland for the first time, here at Bank Street Gallery. She studied at Tartu Art School, graduating, with a major in graphic design, in 2001. Working then in oil and colour, Siret found an ease in conveying emotion, reflecting her reaction to the world around her. However, it is in her ink drawing that she explores memories of past generations, her interpretations of their mythological patterns and symbols.
She reports, "As I am more interested in the universe within, I have given up anatomical drawing: to see within, we look within. I express things the way I feel, not how I see them. After all, to appreciate the surface, all one has to do is open one's eyes - and anyone can do that!"
Living in Tartu, a university town with a history not dissimilar to that of St. Andrews in our own country, she is clearly influenced by the lively cultural scene. She has illustrated poetry books, conducted workshops on beading & jewellery making and is currently employed at the Estonian Folklore Archives whilst running her own design company - Roots Art OU. As a graphic designer, she has created posters and album sleeves for a variety of international artists and festivals, from pop to classical. In 2009 she won the Canadian Blues Underground Network's best original cover art award for Bullfrog Brown's "Moon and Central" CD.
The show runs from Friday 24th June, 2011 to Friday 5th August, 2011. The Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 1pm-4pm
