The joy of contemporary art, however, is that we can continue to witness the development of the artist’s genre.  This exhibition at Bank Street Gallery is a spectacular opportunity to observe the organic evolution of Jonathan Mitchell’s practice.  For the first time, the exhibition offers an opportunity to consider the juxtaposition of Jonathan’s established style against more recent creations.  The body of work inspired by major cities such as London and Glasgow has produced an entirely different palette and style.  But look again and you will find the same meticulous attention to texture and form in the execution of the work.  In Speeding Car, for example, a profound understanding of perspective and foreshortening creates the most efficient impression of velocity.  The painterly realism produces almost photographic effect.  This is exactly the goal Mitchell pursues, explaining that the prolific existence of CCTV images around our twenty-first century has heavily influenced the development of these works.

There is no doubt that Jonathan Mitchell is another quiet giant in the world of Scottish contemporary art whose work will sustain successfully beyond all of us – perhaps precisely the mood he attempts to capture in this most recent collection.

Jonathan Mitchell’s exhibition runs from Friday 13th of August, 2010 closing on Friday24th September 2010.  Bank Street Gallery opens from 10am-4pm Wednesday to Saturday and 1pm-4pm Sunday
